Commission a New Work

Commissioning a new piece of music is an exciting process for both the commissioning party and for the composer. I love to take on new commissions and am very open to discussing what you have in mind. This page answers some basic questions regarding new commissions. If you have more questions, please contact me!

Rates
Commissioning rates vary from project to project. Factors include the size of the ensemble/instrumentation, length of the piece, and the time allowed to compose the piece. Feel free to contact me directly regarding your ideas for a commissioning project. I am also a huge proponent of music education and recognize small budgets allotted to school music programs. If you are worried that you may not have budget to commission a new piece for your school's ensemble, please contact me regardless. I am happy to work with you to come up with a way to make this a reality for your students.

Time Frame
To allow ample time for the composition of your piece, the obtaining of any necessary copyright permissions, the editing of the score and parts, and the delivery of your completed piece time for rehearsal, please contact me 6 to 12 months prior to your first rehearsal for the concert this piece will be performed.

Attendance at the Premiere/Residency
Being a part of the creation of a new musical work is a thrilling experience. There is not anything quite like it. As a composer, I am giving part of myself to that new creation. Another exciting part of the process for any ensemble is to have the composer come to the final rehearsal(s) to give his personal insights into the new composition and have a chance to workshop the piece. It allows the ensemble to get a first hand look at the process a composer takes to creating new music. I love these opportunities and am a huge proponent of them. If you desire a residency with your ensemble and/or my attendance at the premiere, that can be arranged. The cost for travel and lodging as well as a small residency stipend can be included in the contract of the commission.

Copyright
As the composer, I retain copyright of all of my compositions. As the commissioning party you can request sole performing rights for an allotted time without performance by another ensemble. These details will be outlined in the commission contract.

Additional Information
I report all  premieres and performances of my compositions to ASCAP, a performing rights organization. When the time of performance comes, please report the performance here. You may also report the performance directly to ASCAP.

I also appreciate a recording of the premiere performance. I will not sell this recording but use it for my own personal use and promotional material.
